An eldritch ring is an obsidian structure that generates in the Overworld. Each contains an eldritch altar, eldritch obelisk, and a sinister aura node. Some rings may host members of the Crimson Cult, while others may periodically spawn eldritch guardians. Eldritch rings are used to perform the Apertis Oculis ritual to enter the Outer Lands.
Generation[]
Eldritch rings can generate anywhere in the Overworld in any biome; however, they require a 7x7 patch of ground open to the sky that is roughly leveled (varying only 1-2 blocks in height).
Eldritch rings have a 1/66 chance to generate in any given chunk.
Eldritch rings may not generate if they are too close to any other eldritch altar blocks already present in the world, whether they be naturally generated or placed by players in Creative mode using the eldritch obelisk placer. This is to prevent the eldritch mazes they generate from colliding in the Outer Lands. On average, altars must be spread out about 35 chunks apart in both the X-coordinate and Z-coordinate directions.
Eldritch rings will not generate in any chunk where a random aura node has already been generated.
The eldritch altar generated inside the ring will have a 40% chance to generate with Crimson cultists and a 20% chance to periodically spawn eldritch guardians.
Structure[]

An eldritch ring that has generated with Crimson cultists.
Eldritch rings are constructed on a 7x7 pad of randomly mixed obsidian and obsidian tile with the corner blocks missing. A ring of eight eldritch capstones sit on the perimeter of the pad. At the pad's center is an eldritch altar, with an eldritch obelisk floating directly above. Between the altar and the obelisk is a sinister aura node.
When generated with Crimson cultists, two adjacent edges of the pad will also generate Crimson Cult banners.
If the structure manages to generate in a situation where jagged terrain would create a gap beneath the pad, the gap will be filled with a mixture of obsidian and obsidian tile.
Trivia[]
- The name of this structure appears nowhere in the game itself. The name "eldritch ring" is derived from how it is referred to by Thaumcraft's source code.
- When generating with Crimson cultists, all four sides of the pad are intended to generate with banners, but due to a programming oversight, only two banners generate successfully.
- Eldritch rings are the only structure generated by Thaumcraft that can generate on any terrain, meaning they are the only of such structures that can be found truly anywhere on land in the Overworld.
- Along with obsidian totems, eldritch rings are the only structures generated by Thaumcraft that will generate in deserts. This can make deserts good places to search for eldritch rings using a sinister lodestone.
